    Phinney Ridge

Seattle's Phinney neighborhood lies mostly on a high ridge that rises from the western shore of Green Lake. It got its name from Guy Phinney (1852-1893), a wealthy immigrant from Nova Scotia who developed a private estate that became Woodland Park then later became The Woodland Park Zoo. The neighborhood is largely a bedroom community that on the east runs down to Green Lake, and on the west runs to the edge of Ballard at 8th Avenue NW.

You will find many classic craftsman homes, some beautifully restored, some with wonderful western views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound along the ridge. Historically, Phinney Ridge has had very few apartment and condo buildings, but almost every new development along Phinney Avenue has added a few more over the past several years. Phinney Ave is also the center of Phinney Ridge commercial activity. Independent coffee shops and beloved pubs, restaurants, markets, boutiques, antiques, and many other wonderful shops are part of the retail options. There are also a few pocket parks, churches and a community P-Patch. Phinney is also a quick commute to downtown Seattle and has easy access to Aurora (Highway 99) and the I-5 freeway.
