The town of Ballard was established in 1907 and continues to maintain the small town qualities and sense of independence from that time.

Ballard was created for, and was once filled almost exclusively with, Scandinavian fishermen and mill workers. With its miles of shoreline accessing Puget Sound, the community still continues to support a highly successful fishing, shipping and marine industry. However, additional light industry, a busy retail core and a Swedish Hospital branch now provide more employment choices in the neighborhood. With the increased arrival of young, educated professionals taking advantage of the area's relatively reasonable housing prices and proximity to downtown, Ballard has evolved into a much more diverse and upscale neighborhood.

    A Bustling Community

Ballard was once a quiet community that has become a hot spot for shopping and entertainment with specialty stores, boutiques, trendy cafes, galleries and a monthly art walk. A new Trader Joes opened at the base of the Ballard Bridge. And the remodeled Majestic Bay Theater brings in all the new movies on their multiple screens.

    Historic Ballard Homes

Many of the homes built in Ballard were built in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. They were modestly priced but built well to last. I remember talking with a homeowner many years ago that told me his home was built with the best wood and the longest nails. His comments illustrated the pride people took back then in the homes they built and the community they developed. In other parts of the Ballard neighborhood, Sunset Hill and Loyal Heights you'll find larger homes, some with breath-taking views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Many new condominium buildings have also been built over the past few years in the downtown Ballard area offering great amenities and easy walks to all the shopping.
